The Blaze are a Paris-based French electronic music group made up of cousins Guillaume Alric and Jonathan Alric. The duo starts making music together after Jonathan, then at film school in Brussels, asks Guillaume to work with him on a soundtrack for a music video. They use the name The Blaze, which they describe as carrying a sense of strength and warmth, while also meaning “name” in French slang.

Style and approach

The Blaze work as both producers and directors, and their method centres on creating music and visuals together rather than treating them as separate parts. This gives their work a close connection between sound and image.

Releases and videos

Their debut video, “Virile,” appears in January 2016 on Brodinski’s Bromance Records. It wins the UK Music Video Award for Best Alternative Video – International in 2016. Their debut EP, Territory, follows on Animal 63, a label associated with Savoir Faire and Believe Digital. The six-track release includes “Virile” and “Territory.”

The video for “Territory” appears in February 2017 and is produced and directed by the duo themselves. It wins the Film Craft Grand Prix at Cannes Lions, Best Director at the Berlin Music Video Awards, and Best International Dance Video at the UK Music Video Awards. In February 2018, they release “Heaven,” the third video in the sequence, which presents an outdoor setting with family and friends and completes the video triptych.

Album

The Blaze release their debut album, Dancehall, in 2018. The 10-track album includes “Heaven” and the singles “She” and “Faces,” which appear during the summer of that year.

Live activity

The group’s 2018 touring schedule includes appearances at Coachella, Primavera Sound, Roskilde, Lollapalooza, Pitchfork Paris, Parklife, Lovebox, and Reading and Leeds.
