The Beautiful Girls

The Beautiful Girls are an Australian group from Sydney, formed in 2001. The current line-up includes Mat McHugh, Mitchell Connelly and Clay MacDonald. The band’s earlier line-up includes Mat McHugh on vocals and guitar, Paulie B on bass and Bruce Braybrooke on drums.

Style and releases

The Beautiful Girls make music that draws on acoustic, reggae, pop and folk elements, with some rock in the mix. Their work is often associated with artists such as Ben Harper, Jack Johnson and The Police, and their album Spooks also shows Bob Marley influences. The band releases five full-length albums: Learn Yourself, We’re Already Gone, Ziggurats, Spooks and Dancehall Days. They also release the EP Morning Sun.

Awards and chart entries

The Beautiful Girls receive nominations for Best Music Video for “I Thought About You” at the Inside Film Awards, Best Blues & Roots Album at the ARIA Music Awards, and the J Award, all in 2005. They also place four times in the Triple J Hottest 100: “Blackbird” at number 41 and “Music” at number 62 in 2003, and “…And We’ll Dance on the Ashes of What’s Left” at number 68 and “Let’s Take the Long Way Home” at number 81 in 2005.
