The BBC Big Band

The BBC Big Band is a British big band based in the United Kingdom and active since 1964. Originally known as the BBC Radio Big Band, it operates under the auspices of the BBC and brings together professional jazz musicians in a large-format orchestra.

The band’s repertoire and performances sit within big band and jazz, and it is run with a flexibility that includes regular direction from arranger and composer Barry Forgie, who conducts it on a recurring basis from 1977 onwards. It also works with guest conductors, including American jazz trombonist Jiggs Whigham.

The group broadcasts on BBC Radio, especially on BBC Radio 2’s long-running Big Band Special series. It is widely regarded as one of the UK’s leading and most versatile jazz orchestras. The group includes Gordon Campbell and Kenny Hamilton.
