The Avett Brothers

The Avett Brothers are an American group from Concord, United States, formed in 2000 by brothers Scott Avett and Seth Avett after the breakup of their former band, Nemo. Bob Crawford joins as a third member, and cellist Joe Kwon later becomes part of the group. The line-up also includes Oh What a Nightmare and AVTT/PTTN.

Style and sound

The band works across americana, bluegrass, folk, folk rock, indie folk, alt-country and country, with a sound that also draws on old-time country, punk, pop melodies, rock and roll, honky tonk and ragtime. Their music is described as having a “post civil-war modern rock” quality and has also been called “grungegrass”.

Career

For much of their career, the Avetts avoid labels and say that no single term fully fits their music. They later sign to Columbia Records in 2008 to record their fifth album with producer Rick Rubin. Their live performances are often at smaller venues and are known for three-part harmony, a southern rock feel, and an intense, energetic and soulful delivery.

The Avett Brothers gain wider attention through support slots for Dave Matthews Band and appearances at SXSW and Newport Folk Festival. Their work leaves listeners to form their own interpretation of the songs.
