The Algorithm

The Algorithm is the electronic music project of Rémi Gallego, a composer from Perpignan, France, born in 1989. His music combines electronic styles with progressive metal, mathcore and djent. The project begins in 2009 after the dissolution of his former band Dying Breath.

Background and early releases

Gallego first aims to form a mathcore band, drawing inspiration from The Dillinger Escape Plan, but after failing to find other members he starts making music on his own using a guitar and a digital audio workstation. The first Algorithm releases are the free demos The Doppler Effect and CRITICAL.ERROR, issued through his own website in 2009 and 2010.

Live setup and collaborators

For live performances, The Algorithm uses an Akai APC40 MIDI controller, connected to a laptop running Ableton Live. In 2011, Gallego sees a drum cover of “Isometry” by Mike Malyan, the drummer of Monuments, and this leads to Malyan becoming the project’s live drummer. Gallego and Malyan later collaborate on the album track “_MOS”, which Gallego describes as drawing on a shared interest in old-school C64 sounds.

Recordings, labels and performances

In late 2011, The Algorithm signs to Basick Records. The digital single “Tr0jans” follows in 2012, before the debut album Polymorphic Code is released in 2012. The project then releases its second album, OCTOPUS4, in 2014. The Algorithm appears at Euroblast Festival in Cologne, and also plays events including Djentival in Karlsruhe and the UK Tech-Metal Fest in Alton.

Recognition

The Algorithm receives a Metal Hammer Golden God award for best underground artist, with the result decided by readers’ votes.
