TesseracT

TesseracT are a British djent and progressive metal band formed in 2003. They originate from Milton Keynes, United Kingdom, and are active from 2003 to the present. Their music combines progressive metal with djent, math metal, ambient and technical metal, and they are also associated with mathcore, progressive rock and rock.

Formation and early development

The band begins as a project in Acle Kahney’s bedroom, where he develops its early sound as an archetypal djent act. Kahney posts clips of his guitar work on online forums, takes feedback from other musicians, and gradually refines his technique. This helps place the band within a wider community of bedroom-based players that becomes associated with the early development of djent and modern progressive metal.

The style links to other musicians in that scene, including Misha Mansoor of Periphery, Paul Ortiz of Chimp Spanner, and John Browne of Monuments, who is also a former bandmate of Kahney in Fellsilent. The term “djent” itself is described as an onomatopoeic reference to a heavily palm-muted distorted guitar chord, originally coined by Meshuggah guitarist Fredrik Thordendal and later popularised through Misha Mansoor’s forum activity.

Line-up and vocal changes

French vocalist Julien Perier initially supplies vocals, but logistical difficulties prevent him from becoming a permanent member. The line-up is then completed by Jamie Postones on drums, James Monteith on guitar and Amos Williams on bass. Monteith and Williams bring in Abisola Obasanya, the vocalist from their previous band 209, and TesseracT release a three-track demo with Obasanya on vocals.

In 2009, the band parts ways with Obasanya and brings in Daniel Tompkins, who has also worked with SkyHarbor, In Colour, First Signs of Frost and Piano. Tompkins sings on the debut album One, then leaves in 2011. The band then introduces Elliot Coleman, known for work with Zelliack, Of Man Not of Machine, Sky Eats Airplane and Of Legends. Coleman appears on the EP Perspective, which presents acoustic versions of tracks from the debut album, before he departs. Ashe O’Hara, also known as Ashe Austin O’Hara and associated with Voices From the Fuselage and Nebulae, then replaces him. Tompkins later returns in 2014, replacing O’Hara on the live album Odyssey/Scala.

Albums and recordings

TesseracT’s debut album, One, appears in 2011 with Tompkins on vocals. The band follows it with Altered State in 2013. After Tompkins returns, they release Polaris in 2015, Sonder in 2018 and War of Being in 2023. Their recordings are characterised by complex time signatures, experimental progressive writing and atmospheric metal arrangements.

Style and position in the genre

The band is identified with the British djent scene and with a broader progressive metal approach. Their work is noted for technical guitar work, heavy rhythm patterns and an emphasis on atmosphere as well as complexity. They are presented as combining experimental prog sensibility with metallic songs aimed at strong emotional impact rather than technical display alone.
