Terry Hunter is a Chicago house and electronic music DJ, producer and remixer from Chicago, United States. Born in 1970 on the South Side of Chicago, he develops his sound within the city’s house scene and later takes it to clubs and dance floors internationally.

Career

Hunter begins releasing music with the house track Madness, which he plays at parties to build local attention. He is associated with a soulful approach to house music and builds a DJ style based on combining strong songs with a distinctive vocal and rhythmic feel. His work also extends beyond house into hip hop production.

He continues to travel widely as a DJ and producer, and his own output includes releases on his label, Terry's 83 St. Music. He is also described as working with Ts Box record label.

Groups and collaborations

Hunter is one of the people behind UBQ Project and is linked with GT Express, 1 Vision and Mass Destruction. He teams up with Music Plant, a music production and talent management company, and works with fellow Chicago artist Rhymefest in Plugg City, an outlet for Chicago hip hop and R&B.

He is also involved in developing Chicago hip hop artist Twone Gabz and is an active member of the Violator All Star DJs.

Production and remixes

Hunter contributes production to tracks including When I Fell In Luv, Sweet Music, Out on the Dance Floor and Georgie Porgie’s club crossover track Life Goes On. He remixes records for Michael Jackson, Twista, Mary J. Blige and Masters At Work.

With Kenny Dope, he also remixes Kanye West’s Addiction, a track that becomes a regular feature in DJ record collections.

Writing and other credits

He co-writes Raheem DeVaughn’s You, Syleena Johnson’s And He Makes Me Say and Rhymefest’s Mr. Bluecollar.

Background

Hunter says he is introduced to music at a young age and spends much of his early life around records stores and DJing. He describes music as something he feels he is meant to do, and his career grows alongside the wider rise of Chicago house music.
