TEEN

TEEN is a psychedelic pop band formed in Brooklyn, New York, in 2011. The group centres on the Lieberson sisters: Teeny Lieberson on vocals, guitar and keyboards, Lizzie Lieberson on keyboards and vocals, and Katherine Lieberson on drums and vocals. Boshra AlSaadi joins on bass and vocals. The band also begins with Teeny Lieberson after she leaves Here We Go Magic to make music with her sisters and longtime friends, including Jane Herships and former member Maia Ibar.

Early releases and sound

The band debuts with the digital-only EP Little Doods, which sets out a loose, lo-fi psychedelic pop sound with references to the Paisley Underground, including acts such as Opal and Rain Parade. Their first full-length album, In Limbo, is recorded in the summer of 2011 in a converted barn in rural Connecticut and released by Carpark Records in 2012. The album places pop and tribal elements to the fore, with tracks such as “Better”, “Sleep in Noise” and “Unable” showing the band’s use of repetition, organ, tremolo synths and layered vocals.

Albums and collaboration

TEEN releases three full-length albums: In Limbo in 2012, The Way and Color in 2014 and Love Yes in 2016. In Limbo is mixed and produced with Sonic Boom of Spacemen 3 and Spectrum, whose influence adds atmosphere and texture to the record. The band’s arrangements are built around morphing keyboards, driving synths and percussion, with each member’s vocals used as part of the overall sound.
