Tanlines
Tanlines are an electronic and indie rock duo from Brooklyn, United States, active since 2008. The group consists of Jesse Cohen and Eric Emm. Cohen plays percussion, while Emm handles guitar and vocals.
Style and influences
Their music draws on electronic and indie rock, with influences from pop, indie, dance and world music. The group is also associated with electronic, chillwave, indietronica, electro and indie scenes.
Formation and early releases
Tanlines forms in 2008 after Cohen and Emm work together on a production for Cohen’s band Professor Murder. Before Tanlines, Emm works as a producer with his brother Joshua Topolsky and also performs in Don Caballero and Storm & Stress.
The band begins releasing remixes for acts including Au Revoir Simone, The Tough Alliance, El Guincho and Telepathe. In early 2010, Tanlines and Salem release the split EP S.A.W.. Their first EP of original material, Settings, appears in March 2010 and receives praise from Pitchfork, which describes it as an enjoyable listen and a strong introduction to their sound.
Compilation and debut album
In November 2010, Tanlines release Tanlines, a compilation of their released material to that point together with additional tracks and remixes. Their debut album, Mixed Emotions, follows in 2012 and reaches number 2 on the Billboard Heatseekers album chart.
Live work
The band tours with and supports a range of other artists, including Julian Casablancas, Vampire Weekend, The xx, Rick Ross, Yeasayer, Health and Delorean.
