Tamar is the name used by several artists, including Dutch singer-songwriter Tamar Kaprelian, American singer Tamar Braxton, and soul singer Tamar Davis.

Tamar Braxton

Tamar Braxton is an American R&B and soul singer from Severn, Maryland. She is the youngest of the six Braxton children and starts singing as a toddler. Raised in a strict Christian household, she initially sings in church and with her family, and secular music is discouraged at home. The Braxton children begin harmonising together and form a girl group. Their early break comes when they release a single as The Braxtons on Atlantic Records in 1990. The group later works with Antonio “L.A.” Reid and Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds, who are then building LaFace with Arista Records, although they ultimately sign TLC instead of the Braxtons.

The sisters, without Toni Braxton, later release the album So Many Ways on Atlantic in 1996. Tamar also appears on T.D. Jakes’ Love Songs album in 1999, where she explores gospel material. She then works with Christopher “Tricky” Stewart in Atlanta on her solo debut, originally titled Ridiculous and later issued by DreamWorks as Tamar. The album includes “Get None”, with guest appearances from Jermaine Dupri and Amil, and “If You Don’t Wanna Love Me”. When those singles fail to achieve significant radio and video play, the album performs poorly and she is dropped from her contract. She also sings on the Kingdom Come soundtrack and provides background vocals on Toni Braxton’s More Than a Woman.

She later negotiates a new recording contract with Casablanca Records, the label run by Tommy Mottola. Her voice is described as the highest in the Braxton family harmonies, contrasting with her older sister’s husky contralto.
