Takuya Nakamura

Takuya Nakamura is a Japanese composer, producer, trumpeter and keyboardist based in New York. Born in Tokyo, he works across a wide range of instruments and performance settings, including piano, trumpet, turntables and other electronic instruments. He also appears as an improviser and DJ.

Background and training

Nakamura receives formal musical training in both Japan and the United States. He earns a master’s degree at the New England Conservatory in Boston. His work reflects a broad, multi-instrumental approach shaped by jazz, electronic music and live performance.

Collaborations and performances

He collaborates and performs with a wide range of artists, including John Cage, Quincy Jones, the Sun Ra Arkestra, CocoRosie, Laurie Anderson, GZA and Jojo Meyer. His performances take place in varied settings, from the Louvre and Burning Man to clubs, festivals and galleries.

Activity in New York

New York City is his adopted home, and when he is not touring he plays piano and DJs there. His practice combines composition, production, improvisation and live electronic performance.
