System 7

System 7 is a London-based UK electronic dance music group made up of Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy. The project begins in 1990 and remains active, with the two musicians as its core members.

Style and sound

Their music spans ambient, ambient house, drum and bass, electronic, techno and trance. It also draws on progressive house. A recurring feature of the project is Steve Hillage’s heavily processed guitar, which gives many of the tracks a distinctive sound. The music often uses themes and imagery connected to earth, ocean and space.

Releases and collaborators

System 7 releases its first album in 1991 and goes on to issue more than a dozen albums and singles. Although Hillage and Giraudy remain the central partnership, many recordings involve guest artists. Among those named are Derrick May, Alex Paterson, Carl Craig and Laurent Garnier.

Name

The project takes its name from Apple’s OS 7.
