Sylvan Esso

Sylvan Esso is an electronic duo from Durham, United States, formed by vocalist Amelia Meath and electronic musician Nick Sanborn. The group is active from 2012 and works across electronic, electropop and indietronica.

Formation and members

The project is built around Meath and Sanborn. Meath provides the lead vocals, while Sanborn handles the electronic production and instrumentation. The two are the only members of the group.

Early release

The duo’s debut release is the double A-side 12-inch Hey Mami / Play It Right. It appears with a cappella and instrumental versions of both songs, presenting the material in stripped-back and alternate forms.

Musical background

Meath is also known for her work in the folk group Mountain Man, where her voice is joined by other harmonies. In Sylvan Esso, her singing is placed at the centre of the arrangements. Sanborn also plays bass in Megafaun, and his production for Sylvan Esso uses layered, rhythmic grooves that support Meath’s vocals.
