Sykur

Sykur are an Icelandic electronic pop and synthpop group formed in 2009. The line-up includes Halldór Eldjárn and Kreld, and the group also has been associated with Agnes, Stefán and Kristján. Sykur means “sugar” in Icelandic.

Early years and first album

The band emerges from Iceland’s Reykjavik music scene in 2009 and quickly builds a reputation for drawing lively crowds. Their first album, Frábært eða Frábært, is released in 2009. It brings the group critical attention and commercial success. The single “Viltu Dick?” becomes one of the biggest radio hits in Iceland that year.

Sound and releases

Sykur develop an electro-based style that combines synth lines, electronic beats and pop structure. Their second album, Mesopotamia, appears in Iceland in 2011 and expands that sound. The album includes the downtempo track “Battlestar” and the more energetic “Messy Hair” and “Curling”. Its first single, “Shed Those Tears”, helps bring the band wider international recognition.

Collaborations and live work

The group plays an active role in the Reykjavik scene and works with local artists. They also share stages with a range of international acts, including Mt. Eden, Peaches, Familjen, Casiokids, Juvelen, Kleerup and Junior Boys.

Reception

Sykur receive attention from music press in connection with their live shows and recordings, including descriptions that highlight their synth-driven sound and detached vocals. They are an active group from Iceland, with activity continuing from 2009 to the present.
