Syd.31

Syd.31 is a Manchester group active since 2012. It is formed by Dr Magic and Kara Wolf.

Background

Dr Magic previously works in traditional ska and punk bands before moving into a retro, low-fi synth project with friends under the name Population. That earlier group builds a reputation by word of mouth and, within 18 months, works with a number of established acts.

Collaborations and early releases

Population collaborates with Sonic Boom Six, Noisuf-X and Nachtmahr. The group appears on Noisuf-X’s Dead End District album and on Nachtmahr’s Can You Feel the Beat EP after winning a remix competition with only its second remix. It also performs with Nachtmahr at the 2012 edition of Resistanz Festival.

Syd.31

After Population ends, Dr Magic continues working with his live drummer Liam C and forms Syd.31. The group combines punk influences with pop sounds and describes itself as “Venga-Punks”, comparing its sound to a mix of The Vengaboys, The Exploited and Discharge. It makes its live debut supporting XP8 in October 2012, then continues to play live, building popularity and headlining shows.
