Syd Matters

Syd Matters is a Paris-based indie pop and indie rock group active since 2002. The project centres on Jonathan Morali, who uses Syd Matters as a pseudonym derived from a slight alteration of the names Syd Barrett and Roger Waters. The line-up also includes Rémi Alexandre, Clément Carle, Jean-Yves Lozac’h and Olivier Marguerit.

Early releases and formation

The first album, A Whisper and a Sigh, is recorded during the summer of 2002. After its release, Morali forms a new four-piece band around the project. In 2003, the group wins the CQFD prize, which recognises the best French revelation.

Albums and style

The second album, Someday We Will Foresee Obstacles, appears in April 2005. Its sound combines folk and melancholic pop, using slow melodies and acoustic instruments while retaining electronic elements. The third album, Ghost Days, is released in 2008.

Notable track

One of the project’s better-known songs is “To All Of You”, which is featured in the senior prom episode of the television drama The O.C.
