Sunship

Sunship is the UK garage project of producer Ceri Evans. It starts in the United Kingdom and is associated with UK garage, 2-step, breakbeat, acid jazz and electronic music.

Early work and development

Sunship first appears in 1991 with the breakbeat track “Sunship” on the Acid Jazz label. In the early period, the project focuses on remixes and productions for artists including Naughty by Nature, Jungle Brothers and James Taylor.

A later period with the Dorado label follows, issued under the Filter banner, and includes a MOBO award-winning debut album also titled Sunship.

UK garage output and remixes

By the late 1990s, Sunship moves fully into the UK garage sound and begins a run of remixes and productions. Tracks such as “Try Me Out” and “Cheque-One-Two” become club records, while remixes of Jelhisa’s “Friendly Pressure” and E17’s “Each Time” gain wide play in clubs and on radio.

At the turn of the millennium, a Sunship remix of Sweet Female Attitude’s “Flowers” becomes the main mix and reaches number 2 in the chart. In the same period, Sunship remixes Craig David’s number 1 single “Fill Me In”, and also remixes “7 Days”. Sunship then produces Mis-Teeq’s “All I Want”, which gives the project another number 2.

Collaborations and later activity

Sunship also works on remixes for Christina Aguilera, Texas and Morcheeba. A planned album for Go-beat, which includes the Stonebridge outfit Suncycle, does not receive an official release.

Later releases include material featuring Warrior Queen, and the track “Some Kinda Fool” with vocalist Cazza. Another release mentioned is “4u4me” with Charlise, alongside further original 2-step and bassline material.

The project’s crew expands over time and includes DJ Chunky, who provides DJ skills, and James “The Doctor” Dowbekin, who handles engineering. By 2007, Sunship is issuing a series of remixes including work for Midnight Circus, Cherish and other club and radio playlists.
