Sunless 97
Sunless 97 is a London-based group made up of Edward, Alice and Matthew. Their music sits between electronic, guitar-based and pop forms, with a lo-fi and indie-pop edge, and they describe their own sound in deliberately hard-to-place terms. The group draws on a wide range of influences, including ESG, Bonnie Dobson, Robert Wyatt, Suicide, Broadcast and The Bhundu Boys.
Style and influences
Their recordings move between older and newer styles, combining a modern, genre-crossing approach with elements that recall earlier experimental and melodic music. Their mix tapes are noted for reflecting the breadth of their listening, and their songs are built around distinct moods and atmospheres. The music often carries a melancholy tone, balanced by hope and optimism.
Recordings and collaboration
Sunless 97 work with producer Kwes, who records for Warp Records. Together they make Making Waves, their debut EP. The record uses synths, tribal drums and interwoven male and female harmonies, with a cinematic quality and a strong rhythmic focus.
