Suggs is the stage name of Graham McPherson, a singer from Hastings, United Kingdom, born in 1961. He is best known as the frontman of Madness, and is also associated with The Fink Brothers, The Madness and The Scala Band.

Early life

He grows up in London after being born in 1961 to a father described as a heroin-addicted jazz musician and a mother who works as a Soho nightclub hostess. His father is absent, and his mother faces the stigma attached to single motherhood. He grows up in an environment marked by fighting and violence, and later takes his nickname from a boxer.

Madness

As a teenager in north London, he meets a group of like-minded friends and helps form Madness. The band draws on new Jamaican music and develops a blend of ska and upbeat pop that becomes known as the “nutty sound”. The group signs a one-off deal with the Coventry-based label 2-Tone and releases “The Prince”, a tribute to Prince Buster, whose song “Madness” gives the band its name.

Style and significance

With Suggs as lead singer, Madness becomes known for autobiographical lyrics and rhythmic, memorable songs. Their work reflects social and political themes and becomes closely associated with a generation of listeners. Songs such as “Embarrassment” and “Baggy Trousers” are among the classics he writes.

Other associations

In addition to Madness, he is linked with The Fink Brothers, The Madness and The Scala Band.
