Sugar Kane
Sugar Kane is a Brazilian punk rock and hardcore band from Curitiba, formed in 1997 and active from that point to the present. The group has Caique Fermentão among its members and develops a sound associated with hardcore, melodic hardcore, punk rock and punk.
Origins and early releases
The band begins with ambitions to tour widely in Brazil, play in California and release records that reach audiences in Brazil and abroad. Its first recording, Once One Day, is produced in 2000 and sung in English, and appears on Barulho Records. The follow-up album, Por Nossa Paz, arrives in 2002 on Terceiro Mundo Produções Fonográficas and is the first Sugar Kane album in Portuguese.
Developing catalogue
In 2003, the band releases Continuidade da Máquina on Urubuz Records. The album is noted for its heaviness, consistency, detailed arrangement, strong technical playing and thoughtful lyrics. By this point, the group has also completed an extensive tour of more than 100 shows across Brazil, building an audience in major music centres such as São Paulo and Curitiba as well as in the Northeast.
Live release and wider production
In 2004, Sugar Kane undertakes an independent CD/DVD project, described as the first of its kind in the Brazilian scene. The live material is recorded at Hangar 110 in São Paulo, using equipment and crew brought from Curitiba for the performance. A separate acoustic show is also recorded at Teatro do Paiol in Curitiba so that the band’s home audience is included in the project.
Elementar and international work
The band’s fourth album, Elementar, is released in 2005 on Urubuz Records after nine months of production. It is recorded in Brazil, mixed by Angus Cooke in California and mastered by Adam Ayan at Gateway Studios in Portland, Maine. The album follows the band’s first shows outside Brazil, including performances in California in April 2005, and is presented as a more mature and fully realised release in the group’s catalogue.
Line-up
The band members listed are Capilé on vocals and guitar, Renê Bernunça on drums, Karacol on bass, Vini on guitar, and Caique Fermentão.
