Subzero

Subzero is an American New York hardcore band from the outskirts of New York City. It forms in 1989 from members of Breakdown and Upfront, and it becomes one of the longer-running acts in the New York hardcore scene.

History

The band is active through the 1990s and 2000s, although it has a period of inactivity in the late 1990s while singer Lu Dibella deals with lymphoma and leukemia. Dibella is also associated with Subzero, Skarhead and Son of Skam. The band later splits after 20 years in the NYHC scene.

Style and scene

Subzero is associated with hardcore, NYHC, beatdown hardcore, beatdown and metalcore. Its position in the scene is linked to its New York area origins and its long presence in hardcore, even with interruptions.

Notable details

Dibella says his time in hospital and repeated close calls with death shape the lyrics to Lionhearted. He also has a tattoo across his sternum reading “Cancer Killah”.
