Subhead

Subhead is a UK techno group active from 1996 to 2003. The act is centred on Jason Leach and Phil Wells, and Jamie Lidell is also listed among the members. The project begins in London, where Leach and Wells form it as an experimental techno outfit.

Early releases and label work

In 1996, Subhead set up its own self-titled label and initially releases only 12-inch records. The group later continues to issue material through Subhead Recordings, and it also founds the sublabels 2CB and Xtras to house its output.

Style and live reputation

Subhead is known for live performances that combine a techno base with hip hop sound references and a punk-influenced attitude. This approach places the group within experimental techno and gives it a reputation for energetic shows.

Albums and later activity

In 2000, Subhead moves beyond vinyl-only releases with the debut album Neon Rocka, issued on Tresor. Wells later moves to Tokyo in 1999 and records separately under the name DJ Sueme. Phil Wells dies in December 2007.
