Stylo G
Stylo G, born Jason McDermott in 1985, is a grime and dancehall MC with roots in Spanish Town and a long association with South London and the UK music scene. He works in a yardie style and is identified with both grime and dancehall, while also drawing on reggae, hip-hop and R&B.
Early life and background
He is Jamaican-born and raised in Spanish Town. He begins performing very young, appearing on stage with his father at the age of seven. His father is Poison Chang. Growing up, he listens to early 1990s ragga artists including Shabba Ranks and Super Cat.
He arrives in the UK at 15 and, together with his brother Kody Star of Crazy Cousinz, starts writing tracks for other artists. He is also from a family with links to music-making in Jamaica and the UK.
Music career
Stylo G is best known in the grime scene for My Yout, his first release, which becomes an instant hit and introduces many listeners to Icekid. He is described as a hitmaker for his work helping to create tracks for other UK artists.
He is a co-founder of Warning Crew, a group active in the UK dancehall scene, and the group is associated with a first album that is presented as showing his range and skill. He is also part of The Digital Holdings, a London-based audio and visual production company.
Style and activity
His music sits between grime and dancehall, with reggae as his first love and further influence from hip-hop, R&B and wider UK music. He is regarded as a serious long-term artist with a continuing focus on his career.
He also has an award connected to an unreleased project titled Jamaicans in Britain.
