Streetwize

Streetwize is a smooth jazz studio group active from 2002, led by saxophonist Kim Waters. The project brings together urban jazz players including vocalist Maysa Leak and guitarist Ken Navarro.

Style and concept

The group works within smooth jazz and contemporary jazz, but its concept is based on reinterpretation: Streetwize performs current rap and R&B radio hits in a jazz setting. This approach places collaboration at the centre of the project, using familiar popular songs as the basis for smooth jazz versions.

Recordings

Streetwize’s first album, Streetwize: Smooth Urban Jazz, appears on Shanachie in 2002. It includes versions of Mystikal’s “Shake It Fast,” Aaliyah’s “Rock the Boat,” and D’Angelo’s “Brown Sugar.” A second album, Work It, follows the next year and features interpretations of tracks associated with Missy Elliott, Erykah Badu and Jennifer Lopez.
