Stöj Snak

Stöj Snak is a folk punk and screamer-songwriter project from Aalborg, in northern Denmark. It is the solo work of Niels H. Sörensen, and it grows out of the punk scene and the creative approach associated with it. Sörensen also plays guitar and sings backing vocals in the melodic hardcore band Mighty Midgets, and he helps run the indie label 5FeetUnder Records.

Early releases and approach

The project begins as a bedroom-studio idea rather than a full band, but encouragement from friends leads to the debut EP Planned Obsolescence in early 2012. The recording process follows a strong DIY method: Sörensen handles the recording, artwork and physical assembly himself, with mastering done by Rasmus Glassau Clausen, his bandmate in Mighty Midgets. The result is described through its raw, unpolished character and a direct, personal style.

Style and themes

Stöj Snak keeps a clear connection to punk through its political engagement, raw energy and anarchistic approach, even while moving away from the format of a traditional band. A redux version of the debut EP is made after the first pressing sells out at the first live show, and it includes live versions of the songs performed from Sörensen’s allotment garden house with Jesper Olsen on harmonica.

The project is driven by an uncompromised, do-it-yourself ethic and by the aim of making music for the act of creation itself.
