Steven Sogo
Steven Sogo is a Burundian musician from Bujumbura, Burundi, also associated with the United States. He comes from Kamenge, a district in Burundi’s capital, and starts playing guitar and singing at the age of 14, during the civil war, using music to express a wish for normal life and survival.
His work is described as blues-based and acoustic, with songs that reflect pain and hope and comment on Burundian society. He performs in Kirundi, Swahili and French, and focuses on hand-made acoustic music rather than electronic or digital production, with an approach that connects to African traditional music.
Sogo is also identified as part of Hope Street. He is described as a bass player, and as one of the most original artists from Burundi. He is selected by the World Bank Institute as Burundi’s music ambassador.
