Stephanie McKay is a singer-songwriter from the Bronx, United States. She is a member of Brooklyn Funk Essentials and Drugs, and her work is associated with contemporary R&B, neo soul and soul.

Career

McKay records as a solo artist and also works with other musicians across hip hop, dub and soul-related projects. She has collaborated with Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Tricky and Geoff Barrow of Portishead. Her debut solo album, McKay, is released in Europe and is not issued in the United States. It receives critical attention and is compared with 1960s soul, with hip hop and electronica elements. The single Take Me Over gains some mainstream exposure and has a ska-influenced sound; its videos receive frequent play on MTV.

Later releases

In 2006 she releases a second EP on Astralwerks, with two new tracks from her second album and two songs from her first album. Her second album, Tell It Like It Is, is completed but remains unreleased by Astralwerks. She also works with Australian soul producer Katalyst, and their single Say What You Feel is played on Rage and Triple J TV in Australia. The track is described as drawing on classic 1960s and 1970s soul and funk.
