Stained Glass

Stained Glass is a psychedelic pop and psychedelic rock group from San Jose, United States, active from 1966 to 1969. The band’s core line-up includes Dennis Carrasco, Jim McPherson, Bob Rominger and Roger Hedge.

Background

The group begins in the San Jose area, where it starts out in 1964 playing Beatles covers and performs locally before signing to RCA through an A&R representative. Its early releases mix folk and Merseybeat, reflecting the group’s folk-rock leanings as much as its psychedelic reputation.

Recordings and label work

Stained Glass records singles for RCA first, with the earliest releases drawing local attention. Among these, We Got A Long Way To Go becomes a major San Jose hit, and If I Needed Someone, a cover of a Beatles song, gives the group enough momentum for a short east coast tour.

The band later moves to Capitol in the spring of 1968, where it issues three singles and two albums. Of the six 45 rpm sides released on Capitol, Lady In Lace is the only non-album track; it is written by McPherson and backed with Soap and Turkey, written by Rominger.

Members and roles

Roger Hedge plays rhythm guitar, sings and writes songs. Jim McPherson plays bass guitar and keyboard, sings and writes songs, and later performs with Copperhead. Bob Rominger, also credited as Robert Rominger, plays lead guitar, sings and writes songs. Dennis Carrasco plays drums and sings. Tom Bryant is also listed on lead guitar.

Reception

The group’s two Capitol albums are highly rated, but they do not make much commercial impact, and the band disbands in 1970.
