Squid

Squid are a five-piece band formed at university in Brighton. The line-up is Ollie Judge on vocals and drums, Louis Borlase on vocals and guitar, Anton Pearson on guitar, Laurie Nankivell on bass, and Arthur Leadbetter on keys. Their first gig comes after they respond to an advert for a “young person’s jazz night”, and they quickly put together a set.

Early sound and live reputation

The band develop a style built from half-yelped, half-sung vocals, angular guitars, brass, and droning synthesiser lines. They gain attention in the UK underground scene through shows across the South-East and regular trips to London.

Singles, EPs and label releases

Squid issue early tracks and singles including “Perfect Teeth” in 2016 and “LINO” in 2017. They then sign to Speedy Wunderground, and release “The Dial” toward the end of 2018. In 2019 they build a stronger live following and release the four-track EP Town Centre on the same label.

Warp Records and debut album

In 2020, Squid sign to Warp Records and begin work on their debut album. Dan Carey produces the record, helping shape their mix of discordant indie rock and post-punk. Their debut album, Bright Green Field, is released by Warp at the beginning of 2021.

Festival appearances and scene position

By 2019, Squid appear at Green Man and Glastonbury, alongside packed live shows that help establish their reputation. Their sound is often associated with post-punk, art punk, krautrock, crank wave, and experimental rock.
