Squazoid

Squazoid is a French electronic music project from Paris, active since 1999. It works in psytrance and related psychedelic styles, with a sound described through downtempo, psychill, dub, trance, world music and other electronic influences.

Line-up

The project is made up of Jeremy Bringué, Cédric Champalou, Sebastien Monsellier and Alexandre Salomon. Jeremy Bringué also appears as DJ Jem.B, with roles in production, composition, sound design, keyboards and synthesizers. Cédric Champalou handles mixing and sound engineering, Sebastien Monsellier plays bass guitar, and Alexandre Salomon appears as Shyfu, working on composition, guitar, piano and synth.

Style and approach

Squazoid presents itself as a live electronic project built for performance as well as listening. Its music is presented as a blend of ethno-inspired and psychedelic sounds, with strong references to ambient, techno, psychedelic trance, dub, rock and world music. The project also includes visual work through Nicolas Palvadeau, known as Nico Psyart, who contributes as an artist, VJ and video composer.

Performances and scene

The project has performed at Techno Parade, Inspiral UK, Boom Festival in Portugal, Aurora Festival in Greece, Hadra Festival in France, Mysterika Festival in Ukraine, H.O.T Events and Arcadia Festival, as well as many other parties. It has played alongside artists including X-Dream, Juno Reactor, James Monro, Chakra, Gus Till, Adham Shaikh, Gaudi, Paul Taylor, Marc Allen, Sid Shanti, Joti Sidhu, Dino Psaras, Dick Trevor and Goa Gill. In the 1990s it also DJs in the techno scene alongside Robert Armani, Josh Wink, Jeff Mills, Daft Punk and Kevin Saunderson.

Releases and labels

In 2016, Squazoid releases several EPs on OneChill Music and later joins Nutek America and Nutek Chill. It is also associated with a forthcoming album.

Related activity

In Paris, Squazoid works with the collective H.O.T Events to organise H.O.T, or House of Trance, parties held every Friday, featuring progressive and psytrance artists such as Vini Vici, Liquid Soul, Ace Ventura, Ritmo, Morten Granau, Dick Trevor, Egorythmia, Rocky, Phaxe, U-Recken, Gaudium, Avalon, Emok, Sonic Species and X-noize.
