Splashdown

Splashdown is an American group formed in Allston, Massachusetts, in 1996. The band is active from 1996 to 2001 and is described as a pop rock act with a sound that draws on electronica, rock, jazz, and Middle Eastern influences. Their core line-up consists of singer and pianist Melissa R. Kaplan, electronic programmer Kasson Crooker, and guitarist and bassist Adam Buhler.

Style and line-up

Splashdown is associated with indie pop and trip hop, and also with trip-hop, indie, alternative, female vocalists, and electronica. The trio often expands for live performances to a five- or six-piece group. These live line-ups frequently include drummer Jason Sakos and guitarist Trevor Shand.

Related projects

Melissa Kaplan also records as Universal Hall Pass. Kasson Crooker later works under the name Symbion Project. Buhler and Crooker also play together in another female-fronted band in the mid-1990s, Sirensong.

Reception and availability

The band develops a small but very loyal following in the northeastern United States. During the period when file-sharing services such as Napster are prominent, the group is against sharing its songs online. After the band ends, and because much of its music has never been commercially available, the band and its fans make efforts to make Splashdown recordings available free online.
