Spectral Park

Spectral Park is a group from the United Kingdom associated with experimental, indie, lo-fi, noise and noise pop. It issues its debut full-length album under Mexican Summer as a limited vinyl and digital release.

Formation and recording

The project centres on Luke Donovan, a Southampton multi-instrumentalist who plays all of the music and records on the album. The material begins with sounds taken from a box of records found by a council block’s curbside garbage, which Donovan cuts up and processes through a sampler. He then adds live instrumentation and heavily treated vocals to the manipulated fragments.

Sound and approach

Spectral Park’s music combines gritty noise with melodic songwriting, using warped loops, pitch-bent snippets, and layered textures drawn from different periods of musical history. The result is described through themes of 1960s psychedelia, flower child imagery, pop chaos, and dense reverberation. The songs move between breakneck energy and soaring melodies, and the record is shaped by a sense of fracture, change, joy and sadness.

Album

The self-titled debut album presents a reconstructed musical past built from sampled records and new recordings. Its songs are linked by a sense of momentum and instability, with the music set against ideas of hardship, shifting surroundings and altered perception.
