Spanish Love Songs

Spanish Love Songs are an emo band from Los Angeles, active since 2013. The group includes Dylan Slocum on guitar and vocals, Kyle McAulay on guitar, Trevor Dietrich on bass, Ruben Duarte on drums, and Meredith Van Woert on keys. Their sound sits across emo, emo pop, pop punk, punk, punk rock and rock.

Formation and early line-up

The band starts as a three-piece after a previous group dissolves, with Dylan Slocum, Gabe Mayeshiro and Ruben Duarte continuing together. Kyle McAulay joins a few months later after answering an online advert. He also works in a recording studio, and the band begins tracking material for its debut EP before its first show in August 2013.

Releases and development

While still holding down day jobs, the band expands the material from its debut EP into a first album. Giant Sings the Blues is released digitally through the band’s own label in March 2015. It is later reissued by Wiretap Records with extra tracks, and also appears in Europe through Bearded Punk Records.

At the beginning of 2016, Wiretap Records signs the band and reissues the debut with additional material. The group also begins recording its second album in the middle of that year.

Line-up changes and later records

Spanish Love Songs become a five-piece in 2017 with the addition of Meredith Van Woert on keys. That year they complete their second album and issue the three-track digital EP Buffalo Buffalo in October. A demo of the second album reaches A-F Records, which releases the record, while Uncle M handles the European issue. Schmaltz follows in March 2018.

Tours and live activity

The band tours regularly through this period, including support slots with Good Riddance and The Flatliners. They also play across the United States and tour Europe, including their first European dates in 2016. After the release of Schmaltz, they undertake a major U.S. tour and then return to Europe for further shows.
