Soweto Gospel Choir

Soweto Gospel Choir is a South African gospel choir based in Gauteng and active since 2002. It forms in Soweto, South Africa, under the direction of David Mulovhedzi and Beverly Bryer, and it includes a large rotating membership, with the verified line-up including Sibongile Makgate, Nkosinathi Hadebe, Shimmy Jiyane, Jessica Mbangeni, Original Msimango, Sarah Mulovhedzi, Maserame Ndindwa, Sipho Ngcamu, Noluthando Ngqunge, Fikile Sidumo and Lucas Bok.

Style and repertoire

The choir performs a mix of African gospel, traditional hymns, Jamaican reggae, American pop and other spiritually themed secular songs. Its sound is built around South African vocal harmonies and a choral style that presents hope and joy.

Early recognition

The group attracts major attention at the 2003 Edinburgh Festival, where it becomes a surprise success. Out of around 1,600 acts booked for the festival, it ranks as the fourth-highest selling act, adds extra performances to meet demand and gives 29 concerts in the space of a month.

Recordings

The choir’s debut album, Voices from Heaven, appears in 2005 on Shanachie Records. Later that same year it releases Blessed on the same label, followed by African Spirit in 2007.
