Sophie Sugar is a British trance DJ and producer associated with uplifting and progressive trance. She builds her career in the international trance scene as both a selector and a recording artist, and her work appears on labels including Galactive, ATCR and Armada.

Early music interests

She begins playing piano at an early age and collects records from the age of six. In her teens, she gets involved in the club scene, develops an interest in trance and starts DJing.

DJ career

In 2004, Sophie Sugar wins the Gallery/DJ Magazine DJ competition. She then plays in clubs and at events in the UK and abroad, including Canada, Morocco, Abu Dhabi, China, Europe, Germany, the Czech Republic, the USA, Australia, New Zealand and Johannesburg. In the UK, she appears at nights such as The Gallery, Serious and Passion. She also plays at ASOT 400 at Air in Birmingham.

Production work

Her early releases include Call of Tomorrow in 2005 and Isis in 2006. Both tracks gain support from leading trance DJs including Paul van Dyk and Armin van Buuren. In 2007, she releases Fallen Too Far on Armada, followed by Day Seven, Sense of Connection and her version of Art of Trance’s anthem Madagascar. Armin van Buuren includes Day Seven on A State of Trance 2007. Her 2008 release Redemption and the Australian compilation Mixology 11 help extend her profile. She also releases the vocal track Beside You, featuring Rebecca Emely, and plans further work with her, along with a follow-up to Redemption titled Together.

Radio work

She launches the monthly Symphony radio show on di.fm, focused on emotional, uplifting music.

Recognition

Armin van Buuren describes her as the “First Lady of Trance” in 2009, and DJ Mag refers to her as “The UK’s Foremost Female Trance Producer” in the same year. Mixmag names her as “One To Watch” during 2007.
