Its core membership changes over time, but key members include Tony Kakko, Tommy Portimo, Jani Liimatainen, Marko Paasikoski, Mikko Härkin, Henrik Klingenberg, Elias Viljanen and Pasi Kauppinen. Early years and name changes

The band begins as a hard rock act called Tricky Beans, later changing its name to Tricky Means before becoming Sonata Arctica. It starts out playing hard rock and records early demos before moving towards power metal. The first demo mentioned is FullMoon, which appears in 1997 and leads to a recording contract. The group takes influence from other Finnish power metal bands, including Stratovarius.

Debut and early albums

Sonata Arctica releases its debut single, UnOpened, in 1999, followed by the debut album Ecliptica later that year. The album gains international attention and establishes the band in the power metal scene. After the release, keyboardist Mikko Härkin joins for touring. In 2001 the band releases Silence, then tours extensively in Europe, Japan and the Americas. A live album, Songs of Silence, follows in 2002, and Härkin leaves later that year.

Line-up changes and later releases

For Winterheart's Guild in 2003, Jens Johansson contributes keyboard solos during recording, and Henrik Klingenberg becomes the band’s permanent keyboardist. In 2004 Sonata Arctica opens for Iron Maiden in Japan and releases Reckoning Night, which is commercially successful in Finland. The band then moves from Spinefarm Records to Nuclear Blast and releases the live album and DVD For the Sake of Revenge in 2006, followed by the compilation The End of This Chapter.

The album Unia appears in 2007, after which Jani Liimatainen leaves and Elias Viljanen joins on guitar. The Days of Grays follows in 2009 and continues a darker, more progressive direction. During this period the band tours internationally with acts including DragonForce and Ensiferum.

2010s and 2020s

In 2011 the band releases the live DVD Live in Finland. Stones Grow Her Name follows in 2012 and presents a more direct, less complex sound than the previous two studio albums. In 2014 bassist Marko Paasikoski leaves and Pasi Kauppinen replaces him. That year the band releases Pariah's Child, which returns closer to its earlier power metal style, and also re-records Ecliptica.

Sonata Arctica releases The Ninth Hour in 2016 and Talviyö in 2019. Its eleventh studio album, Clear Cold Beyond, follows in 2024. The band continues as a long-running Finnish power metal act.
