Soen
Soen is a progressive metal group from Stockholm, active since 2004 and associated with metal, progressive metal and progressive rock. The band begins as a supergroup built around musicians from the extreme metal scene, and its early line-up includes former Opeth drummer Martin Lopez, bassist Steve Di Giorgio, vocalist Joel Ekelöf and guitarist Kim Platbarzdis.
Formation and early releases
The formation of Soen is announced in 2010. The group’s first song, “Fraccions”, appears on its official website in October that year. Its first video is for “Savia”, followed by a moody acoustic version of “Ideate” and a third video for “Delenda”.
Debut album
Soen’s debut album, Cognitive, is released in 2012 on Spinefarm Records. The record is mixed by David Bottrill and mastered by João Carvalho, and it includes a Japanese-edition bonus track titled “Writhen”. It receives a positive critical response, with attention often focused on the group’s technical playing. Reviewers also frequently note its similarity to Tool, a comparison Martin Lopez addresses by saying the band draws inspiration from them while aiming to make its own music.
Style and members
Lopez describes the band’s music as melodic, heavy and intricate. The verified line-up information identifies Marcus Jidell, Steve di Giorgio and Martin Lopez as members, and the group remains active.
