Social Club

Social Club is a California-based group name used by more than one act, including a Christian hip-hop and rap duo that later renames itself Social Club Misfits, and a noisy pop band from San Jose active in the 1980s. The verified group origin is California, and the 1980s San Jose band fits that setting.

Social Club Misfits

The Christian hip-hop and rap duo under the Social Club name later changes its name to Social Club Misfits. It is associated with Christian rap and hip-hop.

The San Jose band

The other Social Club is a noisy pop band from San Jose, California, active from 1985 to 1990. Its influences include The Who, the Replacements and instrumental surf music.

The band line-up consists of John Barrett on guitar and vocals, Mike Donio on guitar and vocals, Mo Heringer on drums, and Dave Schumacher on bass.

Its recorded output includes three tracks on the 1986 compilation San Jose is Ground Zero, one track on the 1987 compilation the Laundry Works - All Washed UP, the 1988 album Flogging Peasants, and seven demo tracks from 1989 that do not get released.

After the group breaks up, Mike goes on to play with the Frontier Wives, while John, Mo and Dave form the Sugarbombs. In 2002, John and Mike reunite in Lucky Dog, alongside Kim, John’s wife, and former Frontier Wives members Mic and Lex.
