Soccer Mommy

Soccer Mommy is the stage name of Sophia Regina Allison, an American singer-songwriter born in 1997. She is from Zurich in the United States and is based in Nashville, Tennessee. Her work is associated with bedroom pop, dream pop, indie pop, indie rock, lo-fi and singer-songwriter music.

Early life and background

Allison is born in Zürich, Switzerland, to Michelle, an elementary school teacher, and John Allison, a neuroscientist. Her family moves to Nashville when she is a toddler. She attends Nashville School of the Arts, where she studies guitar and plays in the school swing band. She begins playing guitar at the age of six and starts writing her own music early on. She also names Avril Lavigne’s Under My Skin as the first album she owns.

Career

In 2015, Allison begins posting home-recorded songs on Bandcamp under the name Soccer Mommy. While studying music business and English at New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, she plays her first live show as Soccer Mommy at Silent Barn in Bushwick, Brooklyn. She later signs a recording contract with Fat Possum Records. She leaves college after two years in 2017 to focus on her music career in Nashville.

Albums and releases

Her first album as Soccer Mommy, For Young Hearts, is released in 2016 on Orchid Tapes. Collection follows in 2017 on Fat Possum Records. Her debut studio album, Clean, is released in 2018. Color Theory appears in 2020 through Loma Vista Recordings, followed by Sometimes, Forever in 2022 on the same label. Her fourth studio album, Evergreen, is released in 2024 through Loma Vista. She also releases music on her own label, Soccer Mommy Music.

Touring and collaborations

Soccer Mommy tours with Stephen Malkmus, Mitski, Kacey Musgraves, Jay Som, Slowdive, Frankie Cosmos, Liz Phair and Phoebe Bridgers. In 2018, she joins Paramore and Foster the People for the first half of their summer tour and later opens for Vampire Weekend in the fall. In 2019, she opens for several Wilco shows.

Political activity

In February 2020, Allison performs at a presidential rally for Bernie Sanders and endorses his 2020 campaign.
