Smokin Jo
Smokin Jo is a DJ and producer from Norway, born in 1960. She begins her musical career in 1990 after noticing a lack of female DJs on the dance music scene and buying her own set of decks to start mixing.
After developing her skills and receiving positive reactions to her mixtapes, she builds an international career that takes her to clubs and venues in cities including Tokyo, Berlin, Brazil, Mykonos, New York, Ibiza, Miami, Singapore, London and Frankfurt. She becomes a resident for We Love.. Sundays at Space in Ibiza.
Her style moves over time from soulful deep house and tribal music towards deep and tech house, minimal and techno. She is the only female DJ to win DJ Magazine’s DJ of the Year award.
As a producer, she releases State of Mind on Distrakt Records, with support on Radio 1. Other releases include Yanu, The Psycho Bitch EP and Fishbone Sleepers, a collaboration with Peter Heller. She also works with Pete Gleadall under the name TRNSSTR, with tracks signed by Viva, including “Sausage Dog” and “As You Like It”.
Outside music, she appears in fashion magazines such as Glamour, Esquire, Cosmopolitan and FHM, and in publications including The Sunday Times, The Telegraph Magazine and The Independent.
