Slutface

Slutface is a Norwegian indie punk band formed in Stavanger in 2012. The group starts with vocalist Haley Shea and guitarist Tor-Arne Vikingstad, who write songs together before drummer Halvard Skeie Wiencke and bassist Lasse Lokøy join. The band later changes its name to Sløtface on 1 April 2016; the new spelling responds to problems with social media platforms, while the pronunciation stays the same.

Releases and label

The band signs to Propeller Recordings in 2015. Its first single, “Angst,” appears in 2014. This is followed by “Shave My Head” in October 2015 and “Kill Em With Kindness” in January 2016. After the name change, “Sponge State” is released and becomes the lead track from the EP of the same name. Later in 2016, the Empire Records EP appears, including “Take Me Dancing” and “Bright Lights,” with the title track referring to the films Empire Records and High Fidelity.

Albums

Sløtface announces its debut album, Try Not to Freak Out, in 2017, with “Magazine” as the first single. The album is released in 2017 and receives a strong response. The second album, Sorry for the Late Reply, is announced in 2019 and released in 2020, also to positive reviews.

Sound and activism

The band is known for an energetic pop-punk sound, feminist lyrics and activism. Its songs often address women’s rights, equality and environmental concerns. The video for “Sponge State” shows the band performing on Norway’s Førde Fjord in support of protests against Nordic Mining’s environmental practices; the protests lead to more than 80 arrests. Sløtface also takes part in International Women’s Day marches in Norway and discusses these issues in interviews, including one with CNN during its 2017 appearance at SXSW in Austin, Texas.

Line-up changes

On 13 June 2022, bassist Lasse Lokøy and guitarist Tor-Arne Vikingstad leave the group.
