Slow Fiction

Slow Fiction is an indie rock band from New York and has been active since 2021. The group forms in New York City, where it is based, and describes itself through a sound that draws on garage rock, indie rock and melodic, raw songwriting.

Formation and early activity

The band first comes together through Craigslist ads and mutual friends. Its initial meeting takes place at Julia Vassallo’s East Village apartment, where the members sit in a circle with their guitars and work through a song called Brain Protection Agency. The group regards this as its first official band meeting. Its first demos are recorded live in May 2021, and it then spends the summer and autumn of that year playing shows around New York.

Style and influences

Slow Fiction combines personal experience with influences from poetry and New York’s music history. The band’s references include poets associated with the New York School such as Anne Waldman and Ted Berrigan, alongside early 2000s garage rock and indie acts including Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Strokes, Interpol and The Walkmen.

Releases

The band’s debut double single, The Cut / Niagara, appears in February 2022 on Paper Moon Records. It is followed by the EP Slow Fiction in 2023 and the EP Crush in 2024.
