Sloth

Sloth is a harsh noise project from Mentor, Tampa, and has been active since 1991. It is also described as an original Ohio sludge and doom metal band. The name is used by more than one act, but this group is the Florida-based project.

Style and background

The project is associated with harsh noise, while its earlier form is linked to sludge metal, doom metal and stoner doom. In that earlier heavy music context, Sloth begins as a one-man project with other musicians joining on some recordings, and its releases vary in sound from record to record.

Releases and collaborations

In its sludge and doom phase, Sloth issues numerous limited releases on formats including 7-inch, CD, 12-inch and tape. It also appears on split releases with Noothgrush, Corrupted, Floor, Angry Hate, Dot[.], Fistula, Cattlepress, Rwake, Shitstorm and CSMD, among others.

Notes on the name

Several different artists use the name Sloth, including a London doom band formed from the ashes of Godzilla, a breakbeat/psytrance project for V.I.M. Records, a Vietnamese alternative rock duo formed in Hanoi in 2020, and a four-piece stoner/heavy psych band from Brno. This entry refers to the Mentor, Tampa project.
