Slightly Stoopid

Slightly Stoopid is an Ocean Beach, California-based band led by co-founders and multi-instrumentalists Kyle McDonald and Miles Doughty. The group plays a blend of reggae, ska, dub, alternative and rock, and builds much of its identity around constant touring and a strong live reputation.

Career and releases

The band has a seven-album catalogue and continues to divide its time between the road and studio work. Its recorded output includes Acoustic Roots, the second album, which is issued in 1999 through the band’s own label, Stoopid Records. Top of the World is its last studio album mentioned here, and the band says its own recording environment in San Diego helps shape its writing and recording process.

Studio, label and collaboration

Slightly Stoopid operates a recording studio and rehearsal space in the Mission Valley area of San Diego, inland from Ocean Beach, and the site also serves as the offices for Stoopid Records. The band uses the label as its preferred way to distribute its recorded material. Collaboration is a major part of its approach, both live and in the studio, and it regularly works with guests such as G. Love, Angelo Moore of Fishbone, Don Carlos, Barrington Levy, Ian Neville of Dumpstaphunk, Tory Ruffin of Morris Day and the Time and Fishbone, and singer-songwriter Angela Hunte.

G. Love is a long-time friend and frequent studio collaborator. Angelo Moore is described as a regular creative partner on the band’s records, while Don Carlos of Black Uhuru is another important reggae voice the group has worked with in recent years.
