Sky Ferreira is an American singer, songwriter, model and actress from Venice, United States. Born in 1992, she begins sharing songs on Myspace as a teenager, uploading performances of material she writes herself. This leads to her discovery by producers Bloodshy & Avant and a recording contract with Parlophone in 2009.
Recording career
Ferreira’s first EP, As If!, appears in 2011 and combines electropop with dance music. Her second EP, Ghost, follows in 2012 and moves toward more stripped-back pop, while also featuring collaborations with Jon Brion and Shirley Manson. It includes “Everything Is Embarrassing”, a track she writes with Dev Hynes and which becomes one of her best-known songs.
After delays and disputes with her label, her debut studio album, Night Time, My Time, is released in 2013. The album is preceded by “You’re Not the One” and marks a shift away from her earlier style, bringing in more experimental indie rock and synth-pop influences. Her later work continues to move through acoustic, new wave and mainly indie rock directions. She also releases the single “Downhill Lullaby” in 2019.
Film, modelling and public profile
Ferreira appears in Eli Roth’s The Green Inferno in 2013 and gains wider mainstream attention as one of Miley Cyrus’ main support acts on the Bangerz Tour in 2014. Outside music, she models for various brands and magazines and serves as spokeswoman for the hair care brand Redken in 2014.
Style and themes
Her early material includes dance-pop elements, while her later songs lean more toward indie rock. Her lyrics begin with themes of rebellion and teenage romance and later shift toward personal insecurities and more mature romantic themes. Her genres are commonly described as electropop, indie pop, indie rock and pop.
