Sisters of Transistors
Sisters of Transistors are a combo organ quartet and ladies’ social club based at the South Manchester Museum of Keyboard Technology, also described as S.M.M.O.K.T. The group is a brainchild of 808 State’s Graham Massey and centres on weekly afternoon workshops at the museum.
Line-up and setting
The group’s members are Sister Wigby Elka Whippany, Sister Ragna Teisco Dottir, Sister Naomi Doric Pencrest and Sister Henrietta Vox Humana. They perform with museum curator Prof. Vernon World on drums. Their performances use fully working exhibition organs, with particular emphasis on Italian models from the early 1970s.
Music and sound
Their repertoire combines original material in a style described as baroque disco prog with selections from the golden age of horror soundtracks. They use heavily amplified sound through restored British and Soviet amplification systems, which they refer to as “The Wall of Cheese”.
Release
Their first release is The Don / Pendulum, with mixes by Hot Chip and Acid Girls.
