Sia
Sia Kate Isobelle Furler is an Australian singer-songwriter, record producer and music video director. She begins her career in the mid-1990s as a singer in Crisp, an acid jazz band from Adelaide. After Crisp disbands in 1997, she releases her debut studio album, OnlySee, in Australia.
Early solo work and move to London
Sia moves to London and provides lead vocals for the British duo Zero 7. In 2000 she signs to Sony Music’s Dance Pool label and releases her second album, Healing Is Difficult, the following year. She then signs to Go! Beat after becoming unhappy with the promotion of that record, and releases Colour the Small One in 2004.
Relocation to the United States and wider recognition
After Colour the Small One does not connect widely with mainstream audiences, Sia relocates to New York City in 2005 and tours across the United States. She releases Some People Have Real Problems in 2008 and We Are Born in 2010, then takes a break from performing and concentrates on writing songs for other artists.
Collaborations and major releases
Her songwriting and vocal work include the hit collaborations “Titanium” with David Guetta, “Diamonds” with Rihanna and “Wild Ones” with Flo Rida. In 2014 she releases 1000 Forms of Fear, which reaches number one on the US Billboard 200 and produces “Chandelier”, a top-ten breakthrough single, alongside a trilogy of videos featuring child dancer Maddie Ziegler. In 2016 she releases This Is Acting, which includes “Cheap Thrills”, her first number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
Other work and recognition
That same year, Sia’s Nostalgic for the Present Tour incorporates performance art elements. She receives awards including ARIA Awards and an MTV Video Music Award. Her work spans indie, chillout, trip-hop and downtempo, and she is known for both her solo career and her collaborations.
