Shitkid

Shitkid is the solo project of Åsa Söderqvist, a Swedish artist born in 1992 and based in Stockholm. The project originates from Kramfors Municipality and Gothenburg, and is associated with lo-fi and no wave. Söderqvist is the only member of the act.

Background

Söderqvist grows up in northern Sweden and moves away from home in 2008 to study music, guitar and singing at high school. She experiences anxiety about performing in front of audiences, then spends a period away from music before returning to it as a teenager, singing in a local band. After moving to Gothenburg following high school, she becomes involved in a feminist punk band with two friends while also beginning to record alone at home.

Recording and early releases

Her first ShitKid recordings are made on a half-broken computer using GarageBand, over a period of around two months. The early material includes tracks built from vocals and drums, and guitar solos recorded with vocal effects. She shares the songs on SoundCloud in 2015. After focusing on acting and on music for the short-film series Stargazer by Linda Hedström, she contacts Stockholm label PNKSLM Recordings. The label issues the debut single “Oh Please Be A Cocky Cool Kid” in 2016, followed by the self-titled debut EP.
