Shitdisco

Shitdisco are a Glasgow, United Kingdom group active from 2003 to 2009. They form in 2003 while studying at the Glasgow School of Art and describe their music as disco-house/punk. They are closely associated with the new rave movement and are linked with acts such as Klaxons.

Background and activity

The band organise and play free parties and raves in unusual places, including squats, streets, abandoned railway tunnels and club toilets. Until spring 2006, they also hold free parties in a large derelict house on West Princes Street in Glasgow, known locally as “61”. After the band split in 2009, members continue to play DJ sets at venues, and two members form a new band called Age Of Consent.

Releases

Their first single, “Disco Blood/I Know Kung Fu”, appears in December 2005. “Reactor Party” follows almost a year later. Their debut album, Kingdom of Fear, is released on Fierce Panda Records in the UK and on Fierce Panda Canada. Their third single, “OK”, is released in 2008.

Style and influences

Shitdisco are compared with Talking Heads and The Rapture. They cite influences ranging from Donna Summer and Arthur Russell to Gang of Four and The Clash.

The group comprises Joel Stone on bass, guitar and vocals; Joe Reeves on bass, guitar and vocals; Jan Lee on bass, keyboards and backing vocals; and Darren Cullen on drums.
