Shit Robot is the recording name of Marcus Lambkin, an electronic musician and DJ from Dublin, Ireland, born in 1971. He begins DJing in 1992 after moving from Dublin to New York City, where he plays dance music at Brownies, a rock venue on Sunday nights. From those early sets he develops two residencies, including a two-year residency at Save The Robots.
Early club work and Plant Records
While working in New York, Lambkin meets fellow Irishman Dominique Keegan and helps to form Plant Records, Plant Saturdays and Plant Bar. Plant Bar becomes known for its underground reputation, and it is there that Lambkin and James Murphy of DFA start the Shit Robot party, named after Murphy’s robot drawing.
DFA Records releases and solo work
In 2004 Lambkin leaves Plant to work independently and moves to Stuttgart with his wife. He begins producing his own music in rural Germany and releases a series of records on DFA Records from 2006, including the wrong galaxy and triumph!!. His debut album, From the Cradle to the Rave, appears in 2010. It includes contributions from Alexis Taylor of Hot Chip and James Murphy.
Style and DJ work
Lambkin continues to DJ internationally and prefers playing on vinyl. His music draws on early acid house, early techno and punk influences, including Killing Joke. He describes trying to keep those older dance music elements fresh rather than turning them into pastiche.
